Phoenix Medical Cannabis Tax Proposal Canceled

A proposed Phoenix City medical cannabis tax plan would’ve raised $40 to $50 million annually for the city’s police and fire department has been canceled. The proposed tax plan was canceled by Mayor Thelda Williams after concerns were raised about the costs cannabis dispensaries would have to pay in increased taxes. Numerous cannabis businesses would have to pay more than $1 million, with one location at $2.9 million, if the proposed tax plan was approved.

The proposed plan originated from the Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona that paid a law firm to draft the tax plan.

City council members voted unanimously against the tax plan after testimonies from several community members that voiced the downsides of the proposal.
