Minnesota Senator Klobuchar Voices Support for State-Led Cannabis Legalization

800px-Senator_Amy_Klobuchar_Eau_Claire,_Wisconsin,_February_16,_2019_07Amy Klobuchar, in a statement that was first reported by The Washington Post, voiced her support for state-led cannabis legalization.

"I support the legalization of marijuana and believe that states should have the right to determine the best approach to marijuana within their borders," said Senator Klobuchar.

The Minnesota senator’s stance on cannabis in the past as she served as a prosecutor in Minnesota earned her a D grade rating by the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). NORML, one of the most prominent non-profit organizations at the forefront of pro-cannabis law reform, would change her grade from a D to a B after she supported pro-cannabis reform legislations as senator.

Legislation that Sen. Klobuchar supported included the STATES Act. The STATES Act would put protections in place that prevent the Department of Justice (DOJ) from interfering with any state’s already-made decision to legalize cannabis.

Sen. Klobuchar did not endorse the Marijuana Justice Act that aimed to remove cannabis from the list of Schedule I drugs.
